One Restaurant: Truly One of Kind

I’m lucky enough to live in one of the great neighborhoods of New Orleans, the Riverbend Area. This is where St. Charles makes a right turn and becomes Carrolton Avenue. For some reason this area has some of the best restaurants in the city.

For several years I heard had about One and all the accolades it’s gotten. Food critic Tom Fitzmorris had given it four stars so I thought, well that’s good enough for me and I made reservations for myself and my two guests from France who wanted some kind of Cajun type repast.

Literally two minutes from my house we drove over, being the lazy twits that we are we drove over in my big white Mercury Grand Marquis and parked right outside the door. Although the restaurant looks small from the outside, it being a converted shotgun house, when you walk in the seating area goes almost all the way to the back and with the strateigic use of mirrors feels spacious. The decor is dark and modern and reminiscent of European clubs. Tables are small, also European.

For starters we had crabcakes, but these aren’t your mostly bread type but neat little piles of delectable crab surrounded by an indescribably delicious sauce. We also had scallops in some kind of light brown sauce that was so good we used their homemade bread to wipe the plate.

For Entree I had a perfectly cooked red snapper and my guests had fried softshell crab and Cochon de Lait. There was silence at the table while we ate, the tell tale sign of delicious food.

The service was great there being little waiting time for the food to be served. All in all a delightful experience was had by all. So like Mr. Fitzmorris I’d have to give this my four fleur de lis.
