New Orleans has made tremendous strides in education in the last few years since Hurricane Katrina. What was once one of the worst education systems in the country, with kids graduating high school who could barely read or write much less do math, has turned into a model of education reform from public to private schools.
House majority leader Eric Cantor was in town recently to get a glimpse of what’s happening in the city. This to me is a good indication that our educational reforms are not going unnoticed. In fact, they are making an impact around the nation.

Charter schools now make up the majority of the public schools in New Orleans. And Governor Jindal has put forward a voucher program that would allow underprivileged kids to attend private school.
This of course has been challenged by the teacher’s union as they view it a threat to their power and control. But I believe the idea of freedom for our youngsters to be able attend quality schools with ultimately prevail.
