New Orleans Jazz Funeral – You Betta Second Line!!

If you’ve ever wondered what makes New Orleans so different, well then, cher, all you have to do is take a look at this video. Almost everything about New Orleans is wrapped up in the culture of its music, parades, and celebration in life and in death.

New Orleans Jazz Funeral – You Betta Second Line!!

This funeral procession is for Juanita Brooks, a well-known New Orleans musician, a jazz and gospel singer who, in 2009, died suddenly at age 55. She starred in an off-broadway production of “Staggerlee” as well as touring Australia and Germany in a production of “One Mo’ Time.” You can read more about her at OffBeat Magazine site.

In this video you’ll see some famous folks including Doctor John. If you’ve ever wondered why at Jazz Fest and other New Orleans celebrations you may see people popping around with umbrellas in the sunshine, this is where it comes from. When I was a kid we used to see these Jazz Funerals passing right in front of our door. The procession starts with a slow dirge to honor the departed and then finishes with upbeat dixieland as a celebration of life.
