New French Quarter Bar Loves the Literary Scene

Well, as the saying goes good things come to those who wait. And if you’ve been waiting with bated breath for a literary bar to open in New Orleans then wait no longer.

Local businessman Robert Watters has taken it upon himself to go whole hog and create a space where those who are fans of the literary arts and its artists will be able to imbibe at their leisure surrounded by momentos of and dishes inspired by some of our local and other world famous authors.

New Bar in the French Quarter Loves the Literary Scene

Proprietor Robert Watters surveys his new Backspace Literary Bar in the French Quarter.

As the proprietor of this new bar says in an article from the Mississippi Business Journal:

“Backspace Bar is the product of a personal desire to highlight the New Orleans of the past,” Watters said. “The city has a long, colorful history with some of the greatest writers in the world. Many of these artists found their inspiration in comfy chairs, among friendly faces who served strong drinks. We are trying to bring that New Orleans back with Backspace.”

I for one am a fan of Hemingway and, as of this writing I’m in the middle of reading James Joyce’s Ulysses. It’d be nice to be able to go to a place, sit in comfy chairs and imagine that I’m somewhat erudite and well-read. Not that I’m either of those… mind you.

If there’s one thing New Orleans needs more of is bars, the classy, comfy cozy kind. Here’s hoping that Watters will open an uptown branch of his literary bar. I may be a regular visitor.
